Last Sunday, we watched a movie. It’s something we often do together on weekends. Over the past few months we travelled back in time with Sister Act, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Raegan and I are NOT fans, while the boys laugh hysterically), and Never Been Kissed. Light and funny flicks, nothing worth mentioning five days later. This last movie has stuck with me all week.
The Hate You Give was not light and funny and it wasn’t from back in the day—it is now. And it rocked me to the core. I have never encountered a reality so heartbreaking. People so stuck in a cycle that can’t be broken.
So much fear and distrust.
While it’s not an easy movie to watch, I completely recommend that you do. There’s language and violence because it paints an accurate picture of the culture being represented. My teenagers watched with us.
It was eye-opening to the ways we might be acting out in racism without even realizing it.
Fear seizes all of us from time to time, but true faith silences fear. The solution is Faith—defined it means complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
When we trust in someone instead of ourselves, we let that person take care of us. We can relax and rest easy because that person is our advocate, defender, and our only hope. And when we do, there is peace that gives way to courage.

Those are the words of Jesus.
He is someone you can trust. Even when everything is crashing down, even when all hope seems lost.
He is our Hope.
