Nasty Nellies

Nasty Nellies.

We all run into them from time to time, at least I do. In fact, it happened just this week.

I’m a sensitive girl, tears come easy when my feelings get hurt. I hung up the phone and couldn’t believe what I’d heard.

We don’t want to do business with you or your family again.” I fell apart explaining the conversation to Josh.

Tears gushed all over the kitchen floor with my husband’s gentle eyes listening intently. (He’s the best listener on the planet.) He asked a few questions and gave me a hug, then whispered in my ear.

Not everyone is going to like you. Can you handle that?

It’s a pretty intense question.

I don’t have to think about it too often because, generally speaking, I’m a likeable person. I try to give people as much grace as they need, throw grudges out the window, and enter into difficult conversations to save a relationship.

But not everyone is going to like me, not everyone values my friendship enough to save it. Even if it breaks my heart.

The courageous Laura Ingalls didn’t let her Nasty Nellie get the best of her. She stuck out her tongue and pushed Nellie down, but that’s not what I’m suggesting. I see the strength of Laura and it makes me stronger, it gives me the confidence to show up even after being criticized.

What about you?

Can you go on when a Nasty Nellie is calling you a “long-legged snipe” and glaring? Maybe it’s not to your face, attacking someone on social media or spreading rumors throughout the family or at work can be even more damaging. Will you hide out or let bravery win?

Curb your tongue from lashing out and pray for the courage to stand tall. And be sure to speak courage into someone who is experiencing a Nasty Nellie of their own.

  1. We all have people who don’t like us for whatever reason. I just pray for those people and ask God to help me not to hurt others.
